Hungover Hotspots: The Cities That Have Your Back the Morning After
Your city might be the reason you're still on the couch at 2 p.m.
Not every city is built to help you bounce back. Some have a juice bar and an IV drip place within walking distance before you've even opened both eyes. Others offer you gas station coffee and a prayer.
To find out which cities are actually set up for the morning after, we analyzed Yelp listing data and Google Trends search volume across 75 of the most populous U.S. cities.
We looked at wellness amenities and hangover food staples like brunch spots, coffee shops, and diners, plus how often residents are turning to Google for help.
Here's how every city stacked up.
Key Takeaways
-
Irvine, CA, is the most hangover recovery-ready city in America, followed by Plano, TX, Long Beach, CA, Miami, FL, and Newark, NJ.
-
Memphis, TN, is the least hangover recovery-ready city in the study, with some of the lowest per-capita access to juice bars, saunas, brunch spots, and coffee shops.
-
Atlanta residents are Googling "hangover cure" and "hangover prevention" more than any other city (3,844 searches per 100K residents).
-
Newark, NJ, leads all cities in hangover prevention searches, with 17.3% of its hangover-related searches focused on getting ahead of the damage. San Antonio, TX, is the most reactive: 96.3% of its hangover-related searches are for a cure.
The Most (and Least) Recovery-Ready Cities in America
Some cities roll out the red carpet for your worst mornings. Others just kind of let you figure it out.

Irvine, CA, took the top spot as the most hangover recovery-ready city in the country, with Plano, TX, right behind it. Both cities ranked in the top 5 for wellness amenities and hangover food access, so if you're going to overdo it, Southern California and suburban Texas are surprisingly solid places to do it.
At the bottom of the list: Memphis, TN. The city came in last overall, with consistently low per-capita access to the recovery staples that matter most. If you wake up rough there, you're mostly fending for yourself.
Where to Find Wellness When You Need It Most
The overall rankings tell one story, but the real details are in the category breakdowns.
Which cities actually have the infrastructure to help you sweat it out, rehydrate, and eat something greasy enough to bring you back to life?

Irvine led the country in three separate categories at once:
-
IV hydration bars (98.8 per 100K)
-
Juice bars (142.7 per 100K)
-
Coffee shops (455 per 100K)
If IV drips and cold-pressed green juice are your post-night-out religion, Irvine is the promised land.
Newark, NJ, ranked first in the country for saunas, with 113.6 per 100K residents. That's more than double the next closest city, Stockton, CA, at 54.9. If your recovery strategy includes sweating it out, Newark is one of the best places in America to do it.
On the food side, Irvine and Oakland dominated brunch access, with Irvine topping the list at 230 spots per 100K and Oakland close behind at 197.
Stockton, CA, led in diners—the original greasy-spoon hangover fix—with 105 per 100K. Sometimes a stack of pancakes and bottomless coffee is the only correct answer.
Who's Googling for a Cure and Who's Actually Planning Ahead
Search behavior tells a different kind of story than infrastructure. It's less about what's available and more about mindset.
Are you the type of person who preps before going out, or the type who's face-down in your phone at 8 a.m. searching "how to stop feeling like this"?

Americans searched for hangover cures and prevention a combined 756,310 times across the 75 largest U.S. cities between 2023 and 2025. Atlanta led all cities in total search volume at 3,844 per 100K residents, followed by Orlando, FL (3,443) and Minneapolis, MN (3,019).
The split between cure-seekers and prevention-planners was not exactly close. About 93% of all hangover searches were for a cure, while around 7% were for prevention. Most people are not thinking about this until it's already too late, and the data confirms it.
San Antonio was the most extreme example, with 96.3% of its hangover searches going straight to cure. No looking ahead. Just damage control.
Newark bucked the trend entirely. About 17% of its hangover-related searches were for prevention. That's more than double the national average and the highest share of any major city in the country.
Corpus Christi, TX, and Greensboro, NC, also ranked high for prevention searches, suggesting some cities really are out here thinking ahead.
One more thing worth flagging: hangover-related searches overall have dropped nearly 30% since 2023. That tracks with rising rates of alcohol abstinence among younger adults. Whether people are drinking less, recovering better, or just suffering in silence instead of Googling it, the culture around hangovers seems to be shifting.
The Bottom Line on Bouncing Back
Some cities make the morning after almost manageable. Others leave you with a bottle of ibuprofen and hope. But no matter where you live, the best recovery strategy starts before the hangover does, and it usually begins with hydration.
Methodology
To rank America's 75 most populous cities on hangover recovery-readiness, Waterboy analyzed Yelp listing data and Google search volume across 6 factors, grouped into 3 categories:
-
Wellness amenities (40% of overall score): IV hydration bars, juice bars, and saunas per capita.
-
Hangover food options (40% of overall score): Brunch spots, diners, and coffee shops per capita.
-
Hangover search demand (20% of overall score): Google Trends volume for "hangover cure" and "hangover prevention."
All Yelp metrics were normalized per 100,000 residents using U.S. Census population estimates to ensure fair comparison across cities of different sizes. Within each category, individual factors were averaged into a composite category score, then min-max normalized on a 0–100 scale relative to the cities in the study before the final weighted index was calculated.
Search volume was similarly normalized per 100,000 residents before scoring. Cities were ranked by their final weighted index score, with higher scores indicating greater recovery-readiness.
Limitations: Yelp listings may include establishments from adjacent or bordering cities, which could inflate per-capita counts for some metros, particularly smaller or more densely clustered ones. Search volume data reflects online information-seeking behavior and does not account for all factors that may influence hangover recovery or drinking behavior.
